Overview
When his best friend Gary is suddenly snatched away, SpongeBob takes Patrick on a madcap mission far beyond Bikini Bottom to save their pink-shelled pal.
I have to admit that I’ve never really latched onto Spongebob. It totally passed me by, even as others in my age bracket found casual amusement in it (I was more a Powerpuff Girls fan). But I am aware of the character and his undersea surreality with his buddies Patrick, Sandy, Squidward and Plankton. Having never seen the first two movies (but again being aware of them), I have no idea what possessed me to watch this third film. Maybe it was just there.
Anyway, I’m kind of glad I did and I found myself pleasantly chuckling for a fair chunk of the film, and the wacky comic approach was just what I needed right now.
Gary the snail is…snailnapped…by Poseidon, and Spongebob and Patrick set off to rescue him. Along the way they get into a few bizarre scrapes – including an old wild west town plagued by ghosts – and with the help of a tumbleweed called Sage (played hilariously by Keanu Reeves) they face danger without…well…any knowledge of how much danger they are in.
Initially planned for release over Summer, Netflix snapped up the film as an exclusive, and it is available now, and is a welcome slice of good natured joy in this otherwise confusing year of hell we are in.
