Overview
Andy and her team of immortal warriors fight with renewed purpose as they face a powerful new foe threatening their mission to protect humanity.
I’m not going to waste much time with this one as The Old Guard was nothing more than a Temu Highlander, presented in the most generic ‘Netflix bland action’ manner that the streamer keeps churning out. The Old Guard 2 sees the remaining group, including the no-longer immortal Andy (Charlize Theron) still fighting the good fight, only to be interrupted by visions of another immortal threat (Uma Thurman’s Discord) raiding a secret library and putting into motion a threat to humanity, whilst also recovering another immortal from her watery tomb that she has been kept in for centuries. Cue bland and formulaic action, and a mix of characters that have nothing of note to them that would make you care for anything that is happening.
Much like the first film, this absolutely wastes the talents of the actors, and even though it tries to add some emotional depth, it ends up being as shallow as a puddle after light rain. With no reason to care for the characters, this meant that any potential for peril in the action is lost – even for the now mortal (at the start) Andy who seems unaffected by being, you know, fragile now. But don’t worry, as she will be immortal again via what should be an emotional moment had we cared one jot for anyone in the film.
Throw in the fact that this film just ends without a final act, setting up the next film, and it it just insulting to an audience who maybe wanted a complete story. I say before a final act, but structurally it is more like it stops at the end of a very long first act, with no story beats actually explored in any detail to make this stand on its own.
When the third film inevitably lands, I won’t be wasting time watching it. The first film wasn’t good, but this is just mediocre.
